5 Low-Rated Books I Really Liked

When I saw Hannah at So Obsessed With post about 8 low-rated books she enjoyed, I thought it was such a fun idea and wanted to try it myself!  I went to my Goodreads list and sorted the books by average rating.  I picked books that had an average rating of below 3.5.  For me, a 3-star rating basically just means the book was ok, but there weren't many books below 3 stars that I actually enjoyed, so I moved it up to 3.5.

Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns by Lauren Weisberger: Goodreads rating of 2.86.  This sequel doesn't live up to the original Devil Wears Prada, but I am still kind of shocked by the super-low rating on this book.  I liked catching up with Andy and Emily in their post-Runway life.

The Clairvoyants by Karen Brown: Goodreads rating of 3.09.  I gave this haunting and atmospheric story about a woman who can see ghosts 4 stars.

The Possessions by Sara Flannery Murphy: Goodreads rating of 3.2. I rated this book a 4.  I was drawn in by the unique premise (a woman can let the spirit of a deceased person take over her body) and the smooth writing.

The Guineveres by Sarah Domet: Goodreads rating of 3.32.  I gave this book 4 stars.  I really enjoyed the story of four young women who live in a convent.

The Debutante by Kathleen Tessaro: Goodreads rating of 3.36.  I haven't rated this one myself, but I would give this book at least a 4.  I love this dual timeline story with a 1930s mystery thrown in.

What are some low-rated books that you've enjoyed?

  1. This is a really fun idea for a post!

I didn't enjoy The Devil Wears Prada, but I'm much more interested in the sequel because I love Emily's character and it seems like she plays a bigger part in this one. But wow, that average rating is so low! Yikes! Not sure if I should give it a try.

    1. Thanks, Amy! Weisberger's new book that just came out, When Life Gives You Lululemons, is Emily-centric and a better read, as much as that pains me to say!

  4. I have The Possessions sitting on my TBR shelf. I’ve seen mixed reviews, but the synopsis is too weird for me to pass up. I hope I like it.

  5. I haven't heard of any of these books-- there's a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada?? I love the idea of this post-- sometimes the Goodreads ratings can be misleading.

    1. Thanks, Anna! There are actually TWO sequels to The Devil Wears Prada. Revenge Wears Prada is more Andy's story, and When Life Gives You Lululemons is Emily's story.

  6. Great post! So far I have only read Revenge Wears Prada and unfortunately had to agree with the goodreads rating. I'm sure i'll have better luck with the others!

    1. Thanks! Revenge Wears Prada wasn't great, but I thought it deserved higher than 2.86! Harsh!

  7. Oh man, The Guineveres! I never see that one anywhere and I enjoyed it also! I remember I received an ARC of it that had this super cool blue/green/purple cover and I was so shocked when I saw the final cover because its pretty much completely opposite, haha. I've been interested in The Clairvoyants and The Possessions, so I like seeing that you liked them more than others. Great post!

  8. I love this post! The other day I noticed that The Tower And The Emerald by Moyra
Caldecott was only rated 3.08 and I actually really liked that book even if it's an older one.

  9. The Clairvoyants has such a beautiful cover. I haven't read any of these, but The Possessions is on my TBR (I just discovered it today!)

  10. I have read none of these, but I did DNF The Devil Wears Prada. If it makes you feel any better, I was looking at my favorites shelf on GR the other day in preparation for TTT, and I saw a few with ratings below 3.5 stars. Call me a black sheep.

    1. Haha, I'm the same way! I'm even worse with the reverse - I tend to dislike books that most people like! I have that post coming up in two weeks, and I had a LOT to choose from!

  12. Such a great idea for a post. I've not read any of these yet but I am planning to read the second Devil Wears Prada book in spite of the low ratings. I think the lowest rated one I've read recently and enjoyed was School for Psychics.

  13. This really is a fun idea! The only one on your list that I've read is The Guineveres, and I completely agree with you. It deserved a much higher rating.

  14. I haven't read these, but it just goes to show how subjective rating is and how we shouldn't automatically judge books based on the rating they have! This is a fun idea for a post.

  15. I haven't read any of these. I really feel like I have read some low rated books too and wonder why they were. But, it's all on our own perception of the book and that's why most people are so diverse in their reading. Great picks and I have a few on my list.

  16. I really enjoyed The Possessions too and actually gave it 5 stars. I'm not entirely surprised other people didn't enjoy it as much though, since it did feel kind of slow and very strange to me. I could see it not being for everyone :)
