Quotables #19: The Bookish Edition

I love all of these quotes for basically the same reasons - they all perfectly capture the different ways that books touch our lives.  Books are reliable and can be an escape.  We can relate to the characters and see ourselves in them.  Books never judge us and can also make us see ourselves in different ways, even if only within its pages and in our minds.

Quotables #18

I think my fellow bloggers can agree with this!  Sometimes it feels like I'm yelling out into the void!

ALL OF THIS.  I say this all the time - I work to live, not live to work.  I like my job, but when I'm done with my hours, I shut down my computer and try not to think about it again until Monday morning.  Work is the way I afford the things I actually want to do!

Arguments are rarely so black-and-white; usually there's some element of right and wrong on both sides of it, and that's why as an adult, you have to learn to compromise.

Quotables #17

I don't think this is too much to ask!  I can always count on my husband to bring me a treat when I've had a bad day.

This is so true - we all think when we get older, we'll be wiser and know what to do all the time and how to fix things.  But when you're an adult, there's just bigger and more complicated problems to deal with!  We're all just trying to get through the day.

I think this is a really admirable ambition and one we should all strive for!  It doesn't have to be something big, but we should all try to make the world a better place.

Quotables #16

This is totally how I feel about my library - it's still just so amazing to me that I can go to this place where there are practically unlimited amounts of books, and they're FREE, and I can take them all home with me!  There are so many genres, so much to learn - it's really astounding.

As sad as it is, I agree with this.  Sometimes it feels like no matter how hard you work or how good of a person you are, you might not win or get ahead.

As book lovers, I believe our favorite stories become a part of us.  We feel so close to the characters and relate to every word and chapter.  It's amazing how books can affect us so much.

Top Ten Tuesday: Quotables, The Love Edition

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.  This week's topic is a love freebie, so I thought it would be fun to list some of my favorite quotes about love!

“I know part of our story is the electricity of our connection, but the other part is equally miraculous.  It’s the simple fact that you walked into my life at the exact moment you did. You instead of someone else.  In some ways, isn’t that even more incredible than the connection itself? That we found each other at all?” - Blake Crouch, Dark Matter

“Sweetheart, I’m telling you, you love someone like that, you love them the right way, and no time would be enough.  Doesn’t matter if you had thirty years,” she tells me, “It wouldn’t be enough.” - Taylor Jenkins Reid, Forever, Interrupted

“Wanting to find love does not make someone weak; it’s not a character flaw.  Life is hard, and grueling, and having someone root for you and travel beside you is a gift that anyone in the world would be lucky to have.  I’m not saying that people can’t be happy or fulfilled on their own; of course they can. But being open to the possibility of love doesn’t make you weak; it actually makes you strong.”  Crystal Cestari, The Best Kind of Magic

“Love can be an excellent motivator for change.  Falling in love can help us to see the things in life that are truly important.  It can make us want to be better people. It can teach us to sacrifice what is in our own best interest for the sake of someone else.” - Cynthia Hand, The Afterlife of Holly Chase

“Love does that.  It makes you feel infinite and invincible, like the whole world is open to you, anything is achievable, and each day will be filled with wonder.” - Jill Santopolo, The Light We Lost

“Love me when I’m at my worst.  Love me when you don’t agree with me, and when this no longer feels new and surprising.  Love me through it all.” - Camille Pagan, Forever is the Worst Long Time

“You are not entitled to me, just because you love me.  And not just because I love you back.  You have to keep on earning that love, every day, again and again and again.” - Bethany Chase, Results May Vary

‘You are in love,’ he said, ‘for that is exactly how love feels.  It is the lifting of a mask, the revealing of one’s true self to another, and the forced acceptance, the awful awareness that the other person may never feel the same way.’ - Kate Morton, The Clockmaker’s Daughter

“She fondly recalled the moment when the butterflies disappeared, when she was able to smile to herself and know that this wasn’t a case of falling in love; it was love.  She wasn’t a high school student swept up in romance; she was a puzzle piece that had found the match to interlock beside it.” - Yoav Blum, The Coincidence Makers

Quotables #15

I'll be honest, I've heard this quote many times before, but until I read Anne of Green Gables a couple months ago, I had no idea it was from that book!  In any event, I love this quote because I love the month of October!

I thought this quote was hilarious, because it's so true - all of us want things without having to put in the work to get it (like, I want to lose weight without having to change my diet or exercise!).

I can hardly have a round of Quotables without highlighting at least one bookish-related quote, and I loved this one - no matter what else is going on, we'll always have our books!

Quotables #14

In this age where people portray "perfection" on social media, I think it's important to remember that everyone has their own problems.  They might be smaller than yours, they might be bigger than yours, but trust me, they have them.

Even though my sister might disagree, we all know that pink Starbursts are the best Starbursts, and don't we all deserve to be treated as the best?

I mean, I think this one is just perfect for all the bookworms out there.  Reading might seem like a solitary activity, but we readers get to visit new places and meet new people everyday.

Quotables #13

I think sometimes books really do find us when we need them the most, without us even realizing it.  It's such a comforting thought!

I like this quote because it's something I've never really thought about, but when I read it, I thought it was so true.  Sometimes a boyfriend doesn't truly feel like a member of the family until you get engaged or married, but with best friends, it's so different.

The ability to travel practically anywhere without leaving my couch is one of my favorite things about reading.  I get to learn so much!

Quotables #12: The Love Edition

I love this quote because for me it's so true.  You can't take love for granted.  While I don't believe that love should be difficult, you and your partner still have to put work into it.  You have to keep showing the other how much you love them, because complacency can lead to resentment.

The act of falling in love can be a wonderful thing - everything is new and exciting.  But there's something to be said for being in love - it feels comfortable and safe knowing you've found your person.

For love to be true, there has to be honesty.  You have to show that other person who you really are, the good and the bad parts, and then it's up to them whether they will accept you.

Quotables #11

Why it speaks to me:  Ugh, how true is this??  It is SO HARD to make friends as an adult - like, where do you meet people?  How do you talk to them?  I just assume I'm too boring and dorky and no one will like me anyway!

Why it speaks to me:  I know this isn't exactly what Riggs is saying, but this quote reminded me that in this world of social media perfection and jealousy, it's important to remember that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence.  It's so easy to look at what others have that you don't, but we have to remember all the things that make our own lives unique and amazing.

Why it speaks to me: It's so amazing to think that as we're reading our favorite books, we are reminded that someone actually wrote this, they came up with these characters, and stories, and far-away lands.  They poured their heart and soul into creating this book for someone like us to read and enjoy.  And it really is joy to be able to read a beautifully-written book, especially at a time in our life when we really need it.

Quotables #10

Why it speaks to me:  Sometimes those life-changing moments are obvious, and even in the moment you can recognize, wow, it's happening.  But I think a lot of times you don't realize how important a moment is until you get the benefit of hindsight.

Why it speaks to me:  This quote has so much truth in it.  It's easy to love someone when things are going great and everyone's happy.  It can be hard to love someone when they've made a mistake, or done something to upset you, or they're just not being a very nice person.  But that's what love is, being by someone's side through all of life's ups and downs.

Why it speaks to me:  I feel like I could relate a lot to this when I was in high school.  Sure, my life wasn't perfect, but really, nothing absolutely terrible happened to me; at the same time, not too many truly amazing things did, either.  I was just a regular, run-of-the-mill teenager.  But who doesn't dream of finally doing something great?

Quotables #9

Why it speaks to me: I love the spirit of volunteerism that this quote speaks to.  It doesn't matter if your efforts don't amount to huge changes - every little bit helps.  And it's better to at least try than do nothing at all.

Why it speaks to me: Sometimes it is easier for me to interact with people online than in the real world!  This quote is definitely for the shy and introverted among us.

Why it speaks to me: I love the confidence in this quote, and it definitely places the impetus on ourselves to be the person we want to be, instead of just letting things happen to us.  It puts us in charge of our own destiny.  I like the idea that we can change things about ourselves and not just settle because "that's the way I am."

Quotables #8

Why it speaks to me: Sorry, Anna, not sure I agree with you on this one!  I don't think your partner HAS to be your best friend, but they probably most likely are, right?  I mean, you probably have a lot in common, you spend a lot of time together, and they're with you through the highs and lows of life.  Sounds like a best friend to me!

Why it speaks to me:  I identified so much with this quote when I first read it.  This describes pretty well how I feel too often in my own life.  I'm afraid of speaking up, of joining a conversation, of having people take notice of me, because I'm nervous of how I will appear to them.  I wish I had more courage!

Why it speaks to me: This one just makes me chuckle - I mean, that's all?  Sounds like a very sensible list of qualities to look for in a man, haha!

Quotables #7: Love Is In The Air

This edition of Quotables is all about love!  Happy Valentine's Day (a little early)!

Why it speaks to me: When you're truly happy, you feel like you can do anything.  You feel like you have everything to look forward to and the possibilities are endless.

Why it speaks to me: I think love can make us better people.  Our lives are no longer singular; there's someone else to think about and take into account.  It can make us less selfish and more selfless.  And when you really love someone, you want to do everything you can for them.

Why it speaks to me: I love that this quote acknowledges that we don't need a husband/wife/partner to be fulfilled in life, but that it's okay to want one.  It's a wonderful feeling knowing someone is waiting for you at home, who will share your highs and lows.
