Top Ten Tuesday: I Can't With These Series

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.  This week's topic is series we've given up on or don't plan to finish.  I have a bad habit of starting series and not finishing them, either because I just forget about them, lose interest, whatever.  Here are some series I'm giving up on:

Red Rising: I recently finished the first book, and it was kind of a slog for me.  I felt like I was doing a lot of skimming and the world didn't really make sense to me.

The Royals: The first book, Paper Princess, just felt too trashy to me and I have no desire to continue with the series.

Ravenspire: The Shadow Queen was bland and uninspired, so although the next book delves into a new fairytale, I don't have high hopes.

The 5th Wave: The first book was perfectly fine, but I don't see a need to continue.

Dividing Eden: Even though this is only a duology, and part of me wants to complete it just because it's only one other book, the first installment was repetitive and scattered.

Red Queen: Mare is one of the worst characters ever, and I'm tired of her.

Three Dark Crowns: This series just keeps getting longer and longer, and for me the writing is just not good enough to want to continue.

The Great Library: Although I actually kind of enjoyed Ink and Bone, it had so much going on that it made me tired just reading it, and I'm not dying to know what happens next.

Dorothy Must Die: Considering I didn't even make it through the first book, there's little reason for me to continue with this series.

Me Before You: This is the only outlier in the group.  I loved Me Before You, and I thought it ended perfectly.  I don't need to know what happens to Lou next, I already had hope for her.  I worry that if I read the next two books, and they aren't as good as the original, the magic will be lost.

Are you giving up on any of these series?

  1. Great list! Red Rising and Dorothy Must Die are both series I keep telling myself I'm going to get to one day, but I think I'm probably lying to myself. There are just too many series to read to spend our time on books we're not loving!

  2. I also gave up on The Red Queen series, 5th Wave, and Three Dark Crowns. Glad to see it wasn't just me!

  3. I gave up on Red Queen too! That second book made me give up. I hear you on Me Before You. The second book was ok but I really just enjoyed that last book.

  4. the only one I have finished is the 5th wave. I think those books did get better with each book.

  5. I could kick myself for wasting so much time on The 5th Wave - the last two books were terrible for me. Please reconsider the Me Before You series - the last one is really quite good!

    1. No.

Haha, maybe someday! Could I skip right to the 3rd one?

  6. I also gave up on Me Before You. I didn’t hate the ending, but romance is REALLY not my thing. Great list!

    1. Thanks, Aj! I didn't mind the romance, I just felt like it didn't need a sequel.

  7. I gave up on the Red Queen series as well, I struggled too much with Glass Sword!

  8. I only read The 5th Wave from this and I tried reading the second book in the series and was like meh. From what I heard anyway they aren't worth it

  9. I had also planned to give up on Me Before You, but my bestie just finished book three and won't stop raving. Since she's the reason I read book one in the first place, I think I'm powering through to the very end now :)

    1. Well, I hope you enjoy it! I've heard the 3rd book is better than the 2nd.

  10. Well, I haven't read any books in any of these series, so I say - do what feels like the best thing to do. Ha! I've given up on series or just lost track of many. Publishers and authors will keep coming out with new mystery series and what can I do? I have to try them. LOL

    1. Haha, nothing wrong with trying something! If I hadn't tried Still Life, I never would have fallen in love with Three Pines and Gamache!

  11. I felt very similar in regard to The Great Library series! I read the second book and found it far too fast-paced with way too much going on. I read the third book anyway and it was better, but it's definitely an oddly paced series. The Shadow Queen felt so uninspired to me as well and I didn't end up finishing. It looks so good, though, so that was a disappointment. Really enjoyed reading through your thoughts!

    1. Thanks, Jordan! Yes, Shadow Queen was really disappointing. I love the covers in that series, and the synopsis sounded so good. I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt the pace of the Great Library was really off.

  12. Oh no! I just bought Dividing Eden. Hopefully I'll be in just the right mood when I read it and will enjoy it more than you did.

  14. Red Queen is the only one of these I've quit so far. I'm still hopeful that I'll eventually finish Red Rising, Me Before You, and The 5th Wave. We'll see how it goes though, lol.

  15. I abandoned Red Queen and Dorothy as well, but I love the TDC books, and have even read the novellas. I am huge Lou fan too, and was so happy with the ending Moyes gave her.

    1. Maybe I'll skip to the 3rd Me Before You book, everyone seems to love that one!

  16. I gave up on The 5th Wave earlier than the first book (DNF). I couldn't stand the main character.

Red Queen is something I MIGHT continue, but I may choose to abandon it later. 😅

    1. I read the whole book, probably mostly because I had seen the movie and wanted to see if it was the same.

  17. I was not a fan of Dorothy Must Die and I'm so bitter about it. It should have been one I fell in love with, but it was a chore to get through.

    1. I KNOW!! I love The Wizard of Oz and this sounded perfectly twisted. I couldn't even get through the first book; I felt like the author was trying WAY too hard to be edgy.

  18. Sadly -- or not -- I haven't yet tried any of these. And probably won't I must admit. I'm sorry they didn't work out for you.

  19. I kind of gave up on the 5th Wave as well. I have read the first and the second book, but I haven't picked up the last one. I didn't really love the second and I never really felt compelled to know what would happen next.
I don't know why there is a sequel to Me Before You,I thought it ended perfectly with that book, too :)
    Lovely list! :) x

  20. I feel exactly the same as Me Before You! I thought the story was really well wrapped up at the end (even if I bawled my eyes out through most of it!), so I don't really want to read about 'what happened next'. It would't be the same without Will! :(

  21. The Fifth Wave was the best book of the three anyway. I read them all, but if I read them again, I probably will only read the first one.

  22. I get what you mean about The 5th Wave. I haven't read that one, but sometimes I read a book and it's like, there's nothing really wrong with it? But it just doesn't really stand out, so I don't care about continuing. And yes! I feel that way about duologies too. It seems like such a waste to not just finish the series since there's only one more book lol.
