Can't-Wait Wednesday: The Book of Two Ways

Can't-Wait Wednesday is hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings and helps us spotlight upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating!

The Book of Two Ways
Jodi Picoult
Expected publication date: September 22, 2020
Everything changes in a single moment for Dawn Edelstein. She's on a plane when the flight attendant makes an announcement: prepare for a crash landing. She braces herself as thoughts flash through her mind. The shocking thing is, the thoughts are not of her husband, but a man she last saw fifteen years ago: Wyatt Armstrong.

Dawn, miraculously, survives the crash, but so do all the doubts that have suddenly been raised. She has led a good life. Back in Boston, there is her husband, Brian, her beloved daughter, and her work as a death doula, where she helps ease the transition between life and death for patients in hospice.

But somewhere in Egypt is Wyatt Armstrong, who works as an archaeologist unearthing ancient burial sites, a job she once studied for, but was forced to abandon when life suddenly intervened. And now, when it seems that fate is offering her second chances, she is not as sure of the choice she once made.

After the crash landing, the airline ensures the survivors are seen by a doctor, then offers transportation wherever they want to go. The obvious option for Dawn is to continue down the path she is on and go home to her family. The other is to return to the archaeological site she left years before, reconnect with Wyatt and their unresolved history, and maybe even complete her research on The Book of Two Ways--the first known map of the afterlife.

As the story unfolds, Dawn's two possible futures unspool side by side, as do the secrets and doubts long buried beside them. Dawn must confront the questions she's never truly asked: What does a life well-lived look like? When we leave this earth, what do we leave behind? Do we make choices...or do our choices make us? And who would you be, if you hadn't turned out to be the person you are right now? - from Goodreads
I have to admit, I kind of burned myself out on Jodi Picoult's books for awhile; I read too many too fast, and they began to feel formulaic to me.  But, this sounds like a bit of a departure for her, and I enjoy stories that incorporate two simultaneous timelines.

  1. This is on my wishlist too! I've only ever read one book by her (Leaving Time) but always wanted to read more and this upcoming one sounds amazing I must say.

  2. I hate to admit this, but I have never read any of her novels! I feel like I need to remedy that though. I like the sound of this one!

    1. She always has some sort of twist in her books, so I'm wondering what it will be in this one!

  3. Whoa! Ain't nothing like a near death experience to make you re-evaluate things. I sort of feel her husband already though.

  5. I like dual timeline books too. It's been a while since I last read a Picoult book. I think I burnt out on her awhile ago too. But this does sound good, so might be worth a read. I hope you enjoy this one if you read it! Have a great week. Happy Reading!

  6. I'm looking forward to this one too. I admit that when I read the synopsis a while back, I had to look and make sure I was reading about a Picoult book. Definitely different for her.

  8. I still don't think I've ever read any Jodi Picoult! I agree that simply based on summaries I've read, this does sound a bit different, though, haha. I hope you enjoy it!

  9. I hope you enjoy the book! I love the cover. Also, I know what it’s like to burn yourself out on an author. That happened to me with Stephen King. I read a ton of his stuff quickly, and it’s all very similar, so it blurred together in my head.

  12. This is an interesting premise... and one that makes me think someone is going to get hurt no matter what, but still you have to admire Dawn for doing that. I’ll be looking for your review.

  13. Wow, that's quite a second chance at life kind of premise. I've never actually read anything by Picoult despite seeing so many raves for her books.

  14. I did the same thing with Picoult's books a few years ago and haven't been able to bring myself to try another since, lol. This one does sound really good though and like you said, quite different from what she's written in the past.
