Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Couldn't Finish

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  This week's topic is books we had a hard time with, so I've decided to list some recent books that I've DNFed.  Whether it was the writing style, the characters, or the plot, something about these books didn't jive with me, and I had to put them down!

Have you read any of these?  Do I need to give them a second chance?

  1. The Girls in the Garden was a struggle for me. I liked it but didn't love it so I think you are ok with it as a DNF. The Light of Paris is on my TBR but maybe I won't be getting to it anytime soon!

    1. I think lots of other people have loved The Light of Paris, and I thought I would too, but I didn't get farther than a few pages in.

  2. I haven't read any of these but I'd love to try The Last Kingdom.

    1. I thought it was very dry, but hopefully you will have better luck with it!

  3. I haven't read any of these, so sadly I can't help with your 2nd chance question. I love the cover of Girls in the Garden, though!

  4. I recently finished Sharpe's Tiger by Bernard Cornwell, so I can understand that one. I enjoyed it more once I switched from ebook to audiobook. It was a lot less dry and *history class* like then.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thanks

    1. I haven't tried audiobooks yet, but I can see how they might change my perception of a book.

  5. I haven't read any of these yet, so I couldn't help you in deciding whether or not to give them a second chance. But I am trying to more easily DNF a book myself lately. The only issue is that I often struggle with beginnings, so I keep reading to see if it'll change (because it often does), but when it doesn't change I'm already past the DNF point so I just end up finishing anyway...

    1. And I'm the opposite - I rarely keep reading in the hopes that it will get better. If I'm not grabbed by a book pretty early on, I DNF it. If it's something with the writing style, I doubt it would get any better for me. I just wonder how much I'm missing out on by DNFing early!

  6. I'm a big fan of Heather Burch. I really enjoyed In the Light of the Garden. But I can understand it might not appeal to everyone.

  7. The only one of these I've read is The Light of Paris. I enjoyed it but did struggle to get into it at first so I can understand DNFing it.

    1. I just don't have enough patience to stick with something if I'm struggling at the beginning!
