Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Missed As A Kid

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.  This week's topic is books I wish I had read as a child.  I have always been a huge reader, but there were still books, classics and otherwise, that I missed.  Other than Little Women, which I haven't gotten to yet, I read all the rest of these as an adult, but I know my younger self would have loved them!  And just to make myself feel super old, some of these came out when I was already a teenager, so... yeah.

What children's books did you not read until you were an adult?

  1. Harry Potter, for sure! I remember reading one on the train to work and I think it was a scene with the Weasley twins and it just set me off giggling, in the middle of a train, with this tome in my hand and trying to stay upright. Ah, the memoriies lol

  4. Great list! Anne of Green Gables made my list this week, too. I loved Ella Enchanted, and I sometimes wish I'd read The Princess Diaries, too.

  5. I didn't read Little Women until a couple of years ago. Looking back I think I enjoyed it much more then, than I would have if I read it as a child. So it worked out.

  6. Ahhh! I love so many of these. Harry Potter, Capture to Castle, Anne of Green Gables and The Giver are favorites of mine! I re-read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe last year with my son and it was fantastic! I always enjoyed Little Women too. I want to see the new movie! Great list!

  7. All very good choices. In fact, if I'd just gotten to I Capture the Castle, your list would be my perfectly completed set (though I didn't get Chronicles of Narnia in until age 19).

  8. Oh, I would have loved The Princess Diaries had it been around when I was a kid/teenager. I would have inhaled that series back then. :)

    1. Me, too! I think it came out when I was a teenager, but it wasn't really on my radar.

  9. Great list. I still haven't read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I've seen many movie adaptations, but never read the books. I read Little Women, Little Men, and Jo's Boys as a teen, but I wonder what I would think of them now. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I'm old, too! I can't believe some of these books only came out in the last 20 years or so.

  11. I read Harry Potter, Princess Diaries and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe when I was a kid and enjoyed all of them. I never got into the rest of the Narnia books, for some reason I just didn't like any of the ones after that one.

  13. I tried reading Little Women as a kid but didn't get very far. It might have been the old-timey writing. I don't know if I'd like it more now, as I've read a lot of books with old-timey writing.

    1. I read a lot of classics in my teens, outside of school reading, so the writing probably wouldn't have bothered me then!

  15. Good list--I love many of those. I didn't read any but Little House in the LH on the Prairie books until I was an adult. I also didn't read Anne of Greengables etc till I was a grown up.

  16. Anne is very popular today. I wish I had read that one as a kid. I think I would have seen a lot of myself in that character.

    1. Aww! I think Anne is a character you can't help but love.

  17. I read one of the Anne books, but it was one my mom wanted not me, so I didn't really get into the series. I was more into Christopher Pike like horror at the time. I do wish I would have read the whole series now, though.

    1. I've still only read the first. Honestly, when I was a teen, I was reading a lot of Stephen King!

  18. We were forced to read The Giver in middle school. The majority of the class hated it, but I loved it. 😄 Here's my Top Ten Tuesday List!

  19. I wish I had read Harry Potter as a kid as well - it would have definitely been more magical then! I never read The Princess Diaries or Ella Enchanted, but I'm sure I would have LOVED these as a kid.

    1. I think I got more of the inside little joke things and names as an adult, but the pure magic of it would have been fun to experience as a kid!
