Down the TBR Hole is a feature created by Lost in a Story (although the blog seems to be down recently).
I've seen it on a few other blogs and thought I would try it out
myself! It seems like a really good way to cull your TBR of those books
you're no longer interested in. So, how does it work?
- Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
- Order on ascending date added.
- Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
- Read the synopses of the books
- Decide: keep it or should it go?
Here are the books I'm looking at this time:
The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni
A woman finds out she's inherited a noble title and a castle in Italy, but she also discovers dark family secrets. I like the premise, but the reviews are very mixed. Pass!
A woman explores her mother's history, a famous actress who also committed a serious crime. I don't know, this one just isn't grabbing me - pass!
A group of people from all walks of life come together to try to preserve Jane Austen's home and legacy, in the wake of the second world war. I hear Jane Austen and I'm all in - keep!
Three women share the same husband; when one of the wives shows signs of abuse, another tries to figure out who their husband really is. Eh, this just seems a little weird to me - pass!
A dual timeline story about the women and children who survived WWI by taking shelter in the cellars beneath French vineyards and the present-day woman who discovers a decades-old secret after reading correspondence from WWI. This sounds like something I would love - keep!
Two doctors are caught up in a scandal when they have to choose between treating patients or following the new rules set by their hospital. This doesn't sound like the book for me - pass!
A 1980s Massachusetts high school field hockey team take some inspiration from the Salem witches in their winning season. This actually sounds pretty fun - keep!
Have you read any of these?
The Jane Austen Society is so cute! I think you'd like it. The Ancestor was just ok for me. It got WEIRD. Really, really weird and less of a Gothic vibe than I wanted.
ReplyDeleteI remember your review for The Ancestor - that was part of the reason for me passing on it!
DeleteThe Wives had so much hype that I wanted to try it but then I see disappointed reviews right from its released date that it became at easy pass for me.
ReplyDeleteOoh, yes, that's never good!
DeleteI haven't read any of these... as usual 😂
ReplyDeleteHaha, that's ok!
DeleteI see so many raves for Tarryn Fisher over the past few years but for some reason I've just never been drawn to her books.
ReplyDeleteMe, too! I'm not sure if it's because I haven't been as into thrillers.
DeleteThe Ancestor was one I've been on the fence about to. I hope you enjoy your keepers!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tracy!
DeleteThe Austen Society one sounds fun! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree!
DeleteWe Ride Upon Sticks is on my TBR. Like you, I thought it sounded fun, and everyone knows that' my brand after grief books.
ReplyDeleteYes, I can see this being your type of book!
DeleteOoh, I want to put my hand up in The Wives' favour. The premise is weird, but the characterisation and the plot ended up being so much better than I thought!
ReplyDeleteHmm, maybe I'll have to rethink it!
DeleteI've been seeing The Wives around the blogosphere, but the premise doesn't draw me in either.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it sounds a little odd!
DeleteThe Wives doesn't sound good to me either. Maybe The Ancestor, but there are so many books on my TBR that I probably wouldn't add it right now either.
ReplyDeleteExactly, I need to be really excited about a book to add it to my overflowing TBR!
DeleteI have to say, passing on The Ancestor is probably what I would recommend, haha. Parts of it were great, parts of it... not so much. The Jane AUsten Society is one that I really still need to get to! We Ride Upon Sticks sounds so fun.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I've definitely seen a few not-so-great reviews for The Ancestor!
DeleteI haven't read any of these, but I hope you enjoy all the ones you kept on your TBR!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alicia!
DeleteThe Jane Austen Society is one I've been wanting to read.
ReplyDeleteMe, too!
DeleteIf you ever do read We Ride Upon Sticks I'll be interested in what you think. It's very different to what I've heard of before. I've heard good things about The Jane Austen Society. I've heard that the beginning is slow going but it picks up in the second half. Both people who I know personally who've read it really enjoyed the book.
ReplyDeleteYes, I've heard really good things about The Jane Austen Society, too!
