5 Little Mermaid Retellings For Adults

I am a huge Disney fan, and when I was a kid, my favorite of the Disney princesses was (and still is) Ariel (although Belle the bookworm also holds a place in my heart!).  I loved The Little Mermaid, but it was only when I got older that I realized that original Hans Christian Andersen tale is actually pretty dark.  So today I wanted to compile a list of Little Mermaid retellings for adult fans!

The Seafarer's Kiss by Julia Ember: A mermaid falls in love with a maiden trapped on a glacier.

The Mermaid's Daughter by Ann Claycomb: An opera student in Boston feels stabbing pains in her feet, unless she's touching the sea.  I can highly recommend this one - check out my review here.

The Summer Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler: A singer loses her voice, but a potential new relationship may give her renewed hope.

Mermaid by Carolyn Turgeon: Close to the original story, this retelling focuses on a love triangle between the mermaid, prince, and another princess.

Monstrous Beauty by Elizabeth Fama: A mermaid's decision to join her human love echoes through generations.

Do you have any other recommendations for Little Mermaid retellings?  What's your favorite fairy tale retelling?

  2. Ah beautiful post! I love Ariel too, and these covers are so gorgeous. I'm also a huge fairytale retelling fan.

Another Little Mermaid retelling that looks cute is Hushed by Joanne McGregor. I haven't read it, but it looks really sweet :)

I'm gonna add these to my TBR! Thanks for the recs!

  5. I have The Seafarer's Kiss, but have yet to read it. Is it good? I loved The Summer of Chasing Mermaids. I loved the whole idea of people supporting people and helping them achieve their plan B, when plan A falls through.

  9. Thank you so much for this post. It's perfect for me! I adore The Little Mermaid and ever since I read the synopsis for To Kill a Kingdom and saw it's a kind of Little Mermaid retelling, I've been wanting to find more books like that.

    1. You're welcome, Suzanne! It was actually a little harder finding Little Mermaid retellings than, say, Beauty and the Beast, of which there seems to be a ton!

  11. I love fairy tale retellings and yet I never tend to gravitate towards retellings of The Little Mermaid, but the cover of Monstrous Beauty is lovely - I may have to check that one out!

    1. There doesn't seem to be as many Little Mermaid retellings as other fairytales! I don't come across them often, and I had to search for these.

  12. This is such a cool idea! I hadn't even thought of little mermaid-type retellings for adults. Also, the cover for The Seafarer's Kiss is /gorgeous/.

  13. Well, I was just thinking that I wanted to read more mermaid retellings (I recently added To Kill A Kingdom to my TBR which started it all), so your post couldn't come at a better time! I read and liked The Summer of Chasing Mermaids, but the others not yet. They sound so good, adding them all to my TBR :)

  15. Ariel is my favorite Disney princes too! I used to watch The Little Mermaid all the time when I was little. All these books sound fantastic. I've heard great things about The Mermaid's Daughter before, but I've never actually taken the time to find out what it's about. Sarah Ockler's books are usually hit or miss for me, but Chasing Mermaids does sound adorable. Thanks for sharing :)

  17. Ooh the one by Carolyn Turgeon sounds especially interesting! Gonna go check that one out :-) The retelling that comes to my mind (maybe the only one I've read for this story?) is Drown by Esther Dalseno. It was based on the original rather than the Disney one. And it had a fairytale feel to it. I liked it!
