DNF&Y is a feature hosted by Lindsi at Do You Dog-ear? According to Lindsi, "DNF&Y is used to explain why I gave up on certain books, and what about them just didn't work for me. What I disliked about a book might be something you love, so it helps to share your thoughts even when they're negative!" Since I tend to DNF quite a bit, I thought it would be fun to participate!
More Than Words by Jill Santopolo (2019)
More Than Words tells the story of a woman named Nina as she tries to figure out what she wants from her life and how it relates to the three most important men in her life - her father, her boyfriend, and her boss.
I got about 50 pages in before I started skipping around just to see where the story was going. It was feeling predictable, and from what I could tell, I wasn't wrong. The short chapters made the story feel choppy, and Nina came across as kind of a "poor little rich girl." I couldn't relate to any of the other characters, either.
The Catalogue of Shipwrecked Books by Edward Wilson-Lee (2019)
So apparently the illegitimate son of Christopher Columbus had a dream to amass a personal library of everything ever printed. I was super-intrigued by this nonfiction book and it's almost not fair for me to include this book as a DNF since I quit so early. I rapidly lost interest during the first chapter and found myself skimming almost immediately. It was more about Columbus than his son and seemed to be a little scattered. It could just be a matter of bad timing on my part and I just wasn't in the mood for this book at the time.
Have you DNFed any books lately?
I've been wondering about More Than Words. Thanks for the heads up. I've just recently put down a book and quit an audio book. Life is too short to read a book that just doesn't work for you.
ReplyDeleteExactly! I think Jill Santopolo's books are just not for me.
DeleteI've never heard of either of these books & I'm actually kind of disappointed that the second one was non-fiction >.< hahah I typically don't read non-fiction and it had such a good cover - even the premise sounds interesting!
ReplyDeleteI know! The cover totally drew me in, and then the synopsis sounded so cool!
DeleteI’ve read one by Jill Santopolo ( The Light We Lost) and I have such a love/hate relationship with it. I truly disliked the female main character. She was so selfish and made terrible decisions, but I was still drawn into the story and what would happen. I don’t think I’d read anything else by her, though. More Than Words doesn’t have great ratings on GoodReads either.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't crazy about The Light We Lost, but I try not to let my first book by an author totally dissuade me from reading them again. I should have listened to my gut on this one.
DeleteThere has been a time or two that I have DNF'd a book. I try and give it about 50 pages or so before I give up. I haven't had to DNF a book in a while though. These two are both new to me and I don't think they'd be good reads for me either. Have a great weekend!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenea! I think sometimes I can be too quick to DNF, even within the first couple pages, and I don't give things enough of a chance!
DeleteI've never even known that Colombus had a son, her daddy's shadow is too big it seems. I haven't DNF-ed anyhing recently, I just put aside a few books I'd like to get back to soon.

I didn't either, and this book is actually about an illegitimate son. I still really like the premise, so I may go back to it at some point.
DeleteThe catalogue of Shipwrecked Books- hmm that's different.
ReplyDeleteSuch a cool title,right?
DeleteI have not read either of these books, but I applaud you for DNFing when you weren't enjoying them. Why waste time.
ReplyDeleteYes, thanks, Sam!
DeleteI DNF'ed a book about Agrippina recently. I don't have time for books I'm not enjoying.
ReplyDeleteExactly, Stephanie!
DeleteI think I ended up taking More Than Words off my TBR after seeing a few mixed reviews for it.
ReplyDeleteI probably should have done that!
DeleteI haven't DNFd any lately, but I also don't feel like I've been reading much. I alos tend to DNF a lot.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Thanks, Angie!
DeleteI DNF-ed Wicked Girls most recently-ish I think, but that was because it was too dark for me and i didn't have the mindset to go that dark.
ReplyDeleteThat's definitely a good reason to DNF!
DeleteWhat a bummer about The Catalogue of Shipwrecked Books! I am sort of in love with that cover and the premise, but a nonfiction with a scattered narrative is never a winning situation. I've also been curious about More Than Words, but from the sound of it I'm not sure it's something I'd enjoy, either.
ReplyDeleteI love the Catalogue cover, too, and I was bummed it didn't work out.
