Top Ten Tuesday: Cover Love

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.  This week's topic is things that make me pick up a book.  I've done a similar list of things that will instantly make me want to read a book, so I thought I would take this week's topic in a more literal direction and list some aspects of book covers that draw me in.  Generally the cover is our first impression of a book, and there seem to be a few commonalities that will make me want to know more about a book as soon as I see it.

Simplicity: Sometimes a simple cover in a bold color is all that's needed.

Pops of color: A black and white cover punctuated with a pop of color is so striking!

The Eiffel Tower: I am obsessed with Paris, so if I see the Eiffel Tower on a cover, that immediately makes me want to know more about it.

Interesting typography: I love a good font, particularly if it evokes a certain time period.

A pretty dress, particularly if it's period dress: I love historical fiction, and seeing an old-fashioned dress on the cover is a surefire way to make me want to know more about a book.

What are some things you love to see on book covers?

  1. I love seeing pretty book covers :) Who doesn't? Thanks for the collection. I love seeing clever covers that might only have meaning when you've finished the book (like some of the artwork in the A Court of Frost and Starlight covers) and then also simple covers can also really draw my attention. I guess anything striking and I love it when I can easily recognise that it might be a book by a favourite author (like all of Annette Marie's covers) or some of the gorgeous YA fantasy covers that have been coming out (like Everless/Evermore, The Gilded Wolves, Ash Princess etc).

    1. Yes, I love when authors have a specific type of design that they use for all their covers! And yeah, when the cover takes on new meaning once you've read the book, that's always good, too!

  3. Great list! Yes, I love simple cover designs and I really love those covers that have that one pop of colour - if that pop of colour just happens to be yellow, even better.

  8. Covers are definitely important. I never really thought about the fonts, but you're right -- they make a difference. Now I'll notice them for sure :)

    Happy TTT!

  9. I've never read Outlander but that cover is so striking, with the solid blue. I like simplistic covers that still manage to jump out like that, too.

And there is something about the Eiffel Tower. Even though I don't read a lot of straight up romance I always love a shot of Paris or the Eiffel Tower on a cover.

    1. There are so many pretty covers that have a lot going on, but ther's definitely something to be said for a simple design.

  10. I do like all of these, but what I really appreciate is when the cover actually ties into the book or really captures the mood of the book.

  15. The simple kind with just a background and basic text just don't do it for me :-/ But I love color pops! And interesting typography can pull me in too. I love that you were able to pinpoint specific things you like on covers.

  17. There's just something about period dresses that draw me to a cover as well! I'm not much into covers with people on the cover though. I love creative fonts!
